Why We Need a Jamaica Plain Rapid Response Network

  • On March 6, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents stormed into the Michael Bianco factory and 361 immigrant workers were arrested in New Bedford. Families were torn apart and workers lives were ruined. This outrageous action resonated throughout the Greater Boston area and beyond and served as a wake up call. It is expected that ICE will continue to intensify its raids, detention and deportation actions. Immigrant and migrant workers contribute to the wealth and tax infrastructure of the USA and as such have rights. These limited rights to due process are in jeopardy.

  • On May 1st (International Workers Day) of the last two years, millions of people took to the streets demonstrating their support for immigrant and migrant worker rights. The anti immigrant forces understand the significance of the growing pro immigrant movement and are intensifying their repressive tactics via legislation and ICE raids, deportations, militarization of the US/Mexican border and worse. It is estimated that currently, ICE holds over 30,000 people in detention on a daily basis. Many detainees are separated from their families unaware that they have rights to counsel and to let loved ones know where they are. These limited rights must be publicized and protected.

  • Jamaica Plain, with its diverse populations, can be easily targeted for raids. We need to organize to say not in our neighborhood!
